WE ARE REWIND, the company behind sleek high-quality modern cassette players, has partnered with electro-funk duo Chromeo to release a new one-of-a-kind product. The official Chromeo cassette player is a sight to behold—encased in a body of shiny polished chrome that lets fans channel the flashy swagger of the band’s brand.

Formed in Montreal in 2002 by musicians David "Dave 1" Macklovitch and Patrick "P-Thugg" Gemayel, Chromeo is beloved by fans for their super stylized aesthetic, over-the-top music videos, and analog synths—music that just feels meant to be played on cassette. Now fans can listen to Chromeo on a device as funky as their music, thanks to a special collaboration timed with the release of Chromeo’s sixth studio album, Adult Contemporary, released in February 2024. With the We Are Rewind partnership, the duo unveils a new boxed set featuring the polished chrome cassette player and a limited-edition cassette of the new album, complete with two exclusive bonus tracks.

“Chromeo has such a distinct sound and style, so the pressure was on to design a cassette player that captured that,” says Romain Boudruche, CEO of WE ARE REWIND. “The shiny chrome cassette player is a truly unique music player that’s bound to turn heads and bring back the funk.”

Marrying a sleek, simplistic design with state-of-the-art audio engineering, WE ARE REWIND delivers the reinvented cassette player with that familiar warm, high-quality analog sound. Just like old-school cassette players, WE ARE REWIND players have fast forward/rewind buttons, a headphone output, a volume control, and an audio input so users can create their own mixtape. 

A few new features have been added too, scratching the itch of nostalgia while delivering the functionality demanded by today’s music listener. The traditional batteries have been replaced with a rechargeable lithium battery that provides up to 12 hours of continuous playback–a more practical and environmentally friendly alternative. Also built in is a Bluetooth 5.1 connection so users can plug in headphones or connect to a wireless speaker in seconds.

Remember the Sony Walkman? Bursting onto the scene in 1979, the portable music player sold over 220 million units before fading into obscurity as digital music took over–or so we thought. Much like the comeback of vinyl, cassette tapes are seeing a steady revival thanks to movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and the award-winning Netflix series Stranger Things, set in the 80s. In an era defined by the digital, WE ARE REWIND’s sleek cassette players transport music listeners to simpler times–before streaming, and even pre-CD. 

“Despite the gradual rise in cassette sales since 2012, Mattieu and I found that the player options available today don’t meet fans’ standards,” explains Romain Boudruche, CEO of WE ARE REWIND. “That’s when we knew we had to find a solution.”

As expected, finding a manufacturer capable of producing high-quality cassette players was no easy feat, but WE ARE REWIND finally found engineers at French-owned company ORA who had 40 years of design experience with analog sound and a partnered manufacturer who could get the job done. In no time, they had produced a reinvented walkman, with crisp sound and a look that walked the line between vintage and modern.

“At a time when music is going digital, when everything is accessible in a few seconds, the magnetism and romanticism of an audio cassette have remained intact,” says Mattieu Mazières, General Director at WE ARE REWIND. “This shared nostalgia for 80s and 90s culture is what compelled Romain and I to start this business and find a manufacturer to build our design. Now we look forward to sharing our cassette players with other music lovers.”
